The Duolingo English Test does not ask you what a word means. It asks you to pick it - against three words that almost mean the same thing.

That is a different skill from memorising definitions, and this course trains it directly: 6 timed multiple-choice tests, 600 questions, 75 minutes each, built on 216 words that have never been exam material before, rising steadily from a B1/B2 entry test to a C1/C2 summit.

Every question is a four-option MCQ in one of four formats:

• Vocabulary Meaning. Match a word to its plain-English definition, or pick the word a definition describes.

• Vocabulary in Context. Choose the word that correctly completes a real sentence - meaning in use, not in isolation.

• Synonyms & Near-Pairs. Pick the closest in meaning, where the wrong options are chosen to be almost right: averse against adverse, loth against reluctant, assent against ascent.

• Collocations. Complete the phrase native speakers actually say - quell a rebellion, royal assent, abundant enthusiasm - because knowing a word is not the same as using it.

The wrong answers are the training. Each distractor is drawn from the same CEFR band and the same semantic field as the correct answer, so elimination-by-guesswork does not work - exactly like the real test. And every option in every question carries its own written explanation: you always learn why the right answer is right and why the tempting one is wrong. That is 2,400 written justifications across the course.

A difficulty curve you can measure yourself against. Tests 1 and 2 run on a friendly B1/B2 mix so your baseline settles. Test 3 begins the ramp with the first wave of C1 words. Test 4 makes C1 the dominant band and introduces the first C2 words. Test 5 drops B1 entirely. Test 6 is the summit: 26 of the hardest words in the bank, each tested in nearly every format - pass that at 80% and the real DET's vocabulary demands will not surprise you.
